We asked Kevin a few questions about his work, and his experience with exhibiting at Imurj! Take a few minutes and read more about this local artist!

1- How would you describe yourself and your artistic style?

I am a fan of cinema and pop art and my style reflects that. I paint figures in a realistic style, but I try to give my subjects definite characteristics that often border on the absurd. I’ve done a number of works that reference iconic film images and others that create a narrative in a single image. I count comic books, pulp art and classic movie posters as influences in my paintings. And, oftentimes, humor!

2- Does local Raleigh culture inspire or influence your work?

No, not particularly. None of my works are region specific, but I would say that my NC art friends and fans have been invaluable in their support, inspiration and friendship.

3- What is your favorite medium to work with & why?

Oil on gallery wrapped canvas. I enjoy the richness of oil paint and working wet on wet. I do a fair amount of color mixing directly on canvas.

4- How would you describe your art that is on exhibit at Imurj?

My current series, “Painted Ladies” is my attempt, in oil on canvas, to expose today’s audience to images that were created almost ninety years ago. We have a vast wealth of cinema and art in our culture. As time goes by, these older images are in danger of being forgotten. Although these films and promotional images are works of art themselves, my goal was to bring them to a new audience and recreate them in a different art form and honor those whose vision created them. I’ve also included individual quotes from the actresses themselves gives insight into their experiences into their lives in the cinema.
